Salmonella Serotyping
using real time PCR
SpesLab is ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (SANAS) accredited for the serotyping of Salmonella strains by using a highly sophisticated real time PCR technique.

The 2 serotypes required by legislation for food safety can be tested for:

Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium.

We additionally test for Salmonella Heidelberg and Salmonella Infantis as well. If testing for additional serotypes are required, this can be discussed.

Turnaround time is 1-2 working days.
More about Salmonella Serotyping

Where Salmonella spp is present in food samples, the isolates shall be further serotyped in order to verify compliance with the criterion set out for serotypes of significant risk to public health.

SpesLab is SANAS accredited for the serotyping of Salmonella strains required by legislation for food safety: Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella Typhimurium, Salmonella Heidelberg and Salmonella Infantis.

The process of Real Time PCR serotyping is superior to conventional agglutination serotyping for the following reasons:

  • Pure cultures are not required for PCR serotyping
  • Multiple colonies on one plate originating from different salmonella strains can be used in a single analysis to determine the possible presence of all 4 serotypes (Enteritidis, Typhimurium, Heidelberg or Infantis) in a single sample
  • Rather than subjective visualization of agglutination, the PCR serotyping technique provides concrete results by highly sophisticated software rather than human interpretation.
  • This is the only process currently available which highlights the problem areas associated with Salmonella contamination on the plant, factory or farm
